Digital window displays for Britain's favourite chocolatier

Thorntons is a British chocolate brand, established by Joseph William Thornton and his father, in 1911.

the challenge

In 2019, Thorntons began a store re-invention project, revitalising their existing estate through the implementation of a radically new interior design, which included a new digital window display concept. They needed to find a service provider who could advise, install and support the correct technology for their needs.

Our Approach

We recommended the use of ultra bright LCD displays, specifically designed for retail window usage. A range of sizes, from two manufacturers were put forward to provide the greatest level of dimensional flexibility, to account for the wide variety of stores likely to require the solution.

Each display was fitted into custom enclosures, designed and provided by the Thorntons team to integrate beautifully into the overall store aesthetic. A redundant media player setup was specified to ensure maximum reliability, with a discrete player providing the primary duties and the System on Chip (SOC) internal player of the display acting as failover backup.

The Outcome

The new stores look amazing - the digital window displays complement the design well and act as an effective footfall increasing asset. Content is supplied by the Thorntons team and scheduled by us, with our usual retail aligned support desk keeping an eye on the solution with additional cover by our out of hours on-site support engineers.
