Manchester Central is an exhibition centre, event space and conference centre in Manchester, UK that plays host to a range of international trade and consumer exhibitions, conferences and sporting events, based in an original, listed railway station.
As the venue for high-profile events and exhibitions, Manchester Central required a digital customer communications solution that was highly integrated into their existing operational databases, high impact and reliable. They wanted to mix a range of content, from exhibitor specific promotions, live event information and wayfinding on a range of indoor and outdoor displays.
As a client since 2008, when we installed a series of projection displays above one of the main entrance customer help desks, Pixel have helped this leading venue adapt and update their digital media infrastructure to their evolving needs. We based their network on the Scala software platform, providing a series of integrations with their event management database to allow all displays across the venue to be ‘aware’ of the realtime and upcoming schedules. Each display was configured so that it was spatially aware of its position in the venue, which allowed for dynamic wayfinding to be presented to customers without any manual content creation or scheduling.
The integration, automation and reliability of the system installed has proven to be excellent. As a result, the venue has progressively expanded on their initial investment, adding a variety of LCD video walls, outdoor LED totems, freestanding portable totems, panoramic entrance displays and digital meeting room signs. Manchester Central support the day to day running of the system from within their internal IT resources, with second line support from Pixel.
